Israel's parliamentary election, held on October 27, 2026, has ended in a political deadlock, with neither Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's right-wing and religious coalition nor the opposition bloc led by Gadi Eisenkot's Yashar party securing the 61 seats needed to form a government in the 120-member Knesset. Arab political parties have emerged as key players, winning a record 19 seats following an estimated 80% voter turnout among Arab citizens. Arab citizens make up approximately 21% of Israel's population, numbering more than two million. They hold full Israeli citizenship and voting rights and include predominantly Sunni Muslims, as well as Druze and Christian communities. Despite facing challenges relating to public funding, education and infrastructure, Arab citizens also hold important positions in Israeli society. A significant political breakthrough occurred in June 2021 when Mansour Abbas's Ra'am party joined the government led by Naftali Bennett and Yair Lapid. It marked the first time an independent Arab party formally joined an Israeli governing coalition. Abbas prioritised improving the everyday living conditions of Arab citizens rather than focusing exclusively on Palestinian national issues. Although the current election results have created another opportunity for Arab parties to influence government formation, both major political blocs have reportedly rejected seeking their support.
