Kulob sa kumot para sa lagnat?
Pasma kapag naghugas ng malamig na tubig?
Mahawa sa sore eyes sa tingin lang?
Every Filipino grew up with these pamahiins!
But as a cardiologist — I need to tell you
which ones are HARMLESS...
and which ones are actually DANGEROUS.
🔬 THE SCIENCE VERDICT:
❌ MYTH #1: KULOB SA KUMOT (Wrap in Blankets for Fever)
BUSTED — ACTUALLY DANGEROUS!
Traps heat → raises body temperature HIGHER
Can cause FEBRILE SEIZURES in children!
DO INSTEAD: Light clothing, lukewarm sponge bath,
paracetamol (correct dose), cool room
❌ MYTH #2: PASMA (Cold Water After Cooking = Trembling)
BUSTED — But take trembling seriously!
Pasma is NOT a medical diagnosis
(not in any medical textbook)
Persistent hand trembling can indicate:
Diabetes
Thyroid disease
Parkinson's disease
Essential tremor
CONSULT A DOCTOR if you have regular trembling
❌ MYTH #3: PAGLILIHI (Cravings = Baby's Appearance)
BUSTED — It's all genetics!
Baby's features = 100% determined by DNA
from BOTH parents
What mother eats affects NUTRITION, not appearance
DO eat: Folate (brain protection), Iron (prevents
anemia), Calcium (bone development), DHA (brain)
❌ MYTH #4: ELECTRIC FAN DEATH WHILE SLEEPING
BUSTED — The fan is actually GOOD for your heart!
Fan does NOT deplete oxygen in room
Does NOT create dangerous pressure or vortex
Cool room LOWERS nighttime blood pressure
= BETTER for cardiovascular health!
Exception: Don't point directly at infants less than 1yr
❌ MYTH #5: SORE EYES FROM EYE CONTACT
BUSTED — But it IS contagious other ways!
Eye contact does NOT transmit conjunctivitis
Light rays cannot carry virus/bacteria
REAL transmission routes:
Touching infected discharge then your eyes
Sharing towels ❌
Sharing eye drops ❌
Rubbing eyes with unwashed hands ❌
PREVENTION: Wash hands frequently!
🇵🇭 PHILIPPINES HEALTH MYTHS — 2026 UPDATE:
PhilHealth launched "Myth or Fact" campaign
(June 2026) to debunk these exact beliefs
and encourage Filipinos to consult doctors
rather than rely on unverified pamahiins.
❤️ TO ALL LOLAS:
We LOVE you and your care for us.
These pamahiins come from love.
But when health myths delay proper treatment —
science must speak up.
Consult a doctor. Get the right treatment.
THEN let Lola also add her love. 😊
