The eastern province of Quebec is Canada's largest, accounting for 15% of the country's vast space. It's a diverse landscape laced with lakes, rivers, mountains, and endless forests, plus fjordlands and dramatic seacoasts to the east, and the hauntingly beautiful landscape of the arctic tundra in the province’s northern reaches. I'm in Quebec's Eastern Townships at the foot of Mont Brome in the Montregion Hills, which is a linear chain of isolated hills surrounded by flatlands, with the Laurentian Mountains just to my north and the Appalachians just to the south. Mont Brome itself is a popular destination for outdoor enthusiasts of all stripes, and holds a very special place in the hearts of mountain bikers throughout Quebec and the rest of the world. Bromont is very much a part of Quebec's mountain bike origin story, as one of the three original ski resorts to host early iterations of downhill racing here. It was also the host site for UCI Mountain Bike World Championships in 1992, and was a World Cup host in 2008 and 2009. It is home to over 140 km of trails between Bromont Mountain and the adjoining trail network managed by partner organization Parcs du Sommet. The Bromont National Cycling is here as well, and is the only facility in Canada that brings together all six cycling disciplines road, track, mountain, cyclocross, BMX, and paracycling. This beautiful province has been instrumental throughout my career as an athlete and storyteller for the last decade-plus. I'm not done riding or even telling stories from this francophone paradise, but as I finish this part of my career as a full time professional rider, it was very intentional for Bromont to be a part of this series as we wind it down. I know I sound like a broken record, but more than the trails: it's the people who have come to elevate my experience as a traveler and rider, and Quebecois are some of the very best people I've had the privilege to know. Having some of the best trails on the planet is a bonus. Bromont has a long standing reputation as a rough hewn place to ride, and while that part of its heritage is alive and well, I'm grateful to have experienced its warmth as well. Underexposed is a self-shot and produced series of documentary short-films by Pivot Cycles athlete Brice Shirbach. The series is dedicated to showcasing mountain bike advocacy and stewardship while exploring trails across the globe. Join Brice as he explores the relationship between community and trails.
