About thirty miles north of New Orleans, the Manchac swamp stands full of dead cypress that went gray a hundred years ago. The interstate crosses it on a bridge nearly 23 miles long — no exit, no shoulder, no light once the sun goes down. By day, tour boats drift through the Spanish moss and it looks like one of the most beautiful places in the South. But ask anyone raised on this water what they do when the light starts to fail, and you get the same answer: they get off the water. There's a reason. Three towns once stood on this ground — Ruddock, Frenier, and the old mill town of Manchac — with churches, a schoolhouse, and hundreds of people living along the railroad. In a single night in 1915, the swamp took all three. What really happened to those towns, and to a woman named Julia Brown whose funeral fell on the worst day in the swamp's history, is stranger and sadder than the curse the tour guides sell today.
