After a close call on a gobbler in a steady downpour, the rain finally broke, giving us a chance to shed our gear and dry out. Not long after, we picked up more gobblers, but they weren’t about to make things easy. Henned up and moving away every time we set up, they consistently slipped away from our position. Each time they drifted, we circled wide, trying to get ahead of their line of travel, but it felt like they were one step ahead, slipping past or fading away just out of reach. We stayed with them for hours until they eventually went quiet. An owl call got no response, but a last-ditch crow call finally pulled a gobble from birds, now hundreds of yards away. We started to move on in search of more cooperative birds, but at the last second, we committed to one more attempt on these gobblers. Making a big loop to cut them off again, we set up in a perfect position.
