Vancouver, British Columbia, in the war years, in real Kodachrome color scanned from the original 16mm film. Not colorized, not AI. A family from the American side drives up to the Peace Arch, gets looked over by Canada Customs, and spends a day in a city working around the clock: Pender Street in Chinatown, where nobody could yet vote; the bus signed UBC and the campus at Point Grey; downtown with the shipyards across the inlet running three shifts; the Hudson's Bay store at Georgia and Granville dressed in flags; then the Canadian Pacific Princess boat across the strait to Victoria, the Parliament Buildings, and a shopping afternoon downtown among servicemen on leave. The narration is about how people lived: gasoline and sugar rationing, 270,000 bus riders a day, 14,000 on the shipyard payroll with women paid the same as men, and the Chinese Exclusion Act that was not repealed until 1947.
