One wooden pier, eight goodbyes, every one of them at six in the evening across sixty years. The same forty yards of board, the same low light, the same water hitting the same pilings, and somebody walking back up it alone. A week. A month. A cane season. A year. Five years and two letters. Eleven years that ended when the money ran out. Thirty years and a taxi from the airport. And one that never ended at all.

Album notes: the record is sequenced by length of absence rather than by date, so the years move backwards and forwards freely and the album gets heavier without getting later. Four physical facts appear in every single song, in the same order — the six o'clock light, the third board from the end, the sound of water on the pilings, and the walk back up the pier alone — and the arrangement grows around them. Every track has a different backing texture: whistling, handclaps, an organ pad, one held drone, humming, a male voice on the offbeat only, a full stacked chorus, and then, for the goodbye that never ended, nothing at all.
The Moog carries the melody, deliberately anachronistic for a seventies Kingston session, which is the point: it is the one sound on the record that could not have been standing on that pier in 1963. Behind it, a full band from bar one, offbeat guitar chop, fat analog bass and organ. Tempos run 96 to 110 BPM.
