Median household income hit a record $87,460 in 2025 (Census Bureau). Yet in September, prices rose 3.7% from a year ago while average hourly pay rose 3.0% (BLS), so real earnings fell 0.7%. So why do so many Americans feel poorer even with raises? Here are 10 reasons, plus what the data does NOT say.
In this video I go through the numbers: why the price level never goes back down, the timing of raises vs prices, gas and energy, rent, health care costs, mortgage rates, debt, savings, the gap between average and typical households, and the mood surveys. At the end, 5 practical things to check in your own budget.
