Sergei Rachmaninoff plays Frédéric Chopin’s Piano Sonata No. 2 in B-flat minor, Op. 35 — restored from the historic 1930 recording by ArchiveMaestro.
Recorded on 18 February 1930 in Camden, New Jersey, this extraordinary document preserves one of the greatest pianist-composers of the age performing one of Chopin’s most uncompromising works.
Rachmaninoff’s interpretation has immense structural command, weight, and momentum. The famous Marche funèbre is followed by the astonishing final Presto — barely more than a minute of relentless motion, where the keyboard seems to erupt into a continuous current of sound.
In surviving transfers, that finale can easily become glassy, noisy, and blurred. In this restoration, the aim was to recover the articulation, harmonic structure and transient clarity buried beneath the limitations of the historical recording — without rewriting Rachmaninoff’s performance.

ArchiveMaestro restores historic classical recordings using modern audio analysis while preserving the interpretation, dynamics, tonal character, and identity of the original performance.
The objective is not to make the past artificially modern, but to reduce the barriers created by historical recording media: restricted bandwidth, surface noise, unstable tonal balance, and limited spatial presentation.
For the most revealing experience, listen with good headphones or a full-range stereo system.
Historic performance. Modern restoration. Musical integrity preserved.
