Tamikrest (ML) Sahara rock from Mali Tamikrest was founded in 2006 in Tinzawaten, on the border between Algeria and Mali. Their music is rooted in the tradition of the Kel Tamasheq, the Tuareg people of the Sahara. Building on that foundation, the band developed a powerful sound that blends desert blues, trance, and the raw energy of rock. In doing so, they build upon the guitar tradition that brought Saharan music to the world stage. The name Tamikrest means “connection” or “crossroads” in Tamasheq. That meaning is reflected in their music: a meeting of tradition and modern rock influences. Their lyrics convey a deep connection to Tuareg identity. Themes such as freedom, justice, and the longing for a self-determined future run like a common thread through their work. Through their music, they aim to make Tamasheq poetry and culture audible to a world that extends far beyond the vastness of the Sahara.
