The fire was still burning when Londoners began lying down beside the belongings they had carried into the fields. Where could a family sleep when its home—and thousands of others—had disappeared?
This video follows the search for shelter after the Great Fire of London: the first nights outdoors, tents and rough huts, borrowed quilts and crowded workplaces, sleeping on floors, rising rents and the temporary neighborhoods that grew while the City was rebuilt.
The figure of around 100,000 homeless is a commonly used estimate, not an exact census. Historical estimates differ. Representative household choices explain practical problems without claiming to reconstruct one documented family's experience. Pepys and Evelyn appear briefly as witnesses; their resources and experiences were not shared by every displaced person.
