Fall asleep beside a still lake in the North Woods.
Every star in this video is where it really was, calculated from real star catalog data for the Boundary Waters, Minnesota on the night of October 9, from 9:30 PM to 10:54 PM (CDT). We're facing southwest, across open water toward the spruce shore. It was a new moon that night — the moon never rises, so the sky stays as dark as it gets.
The lake is not a mirrored copy of the picture. Every patch of water works out which direction of sky it would reflect, and shows that piece of sky, dimmed the way real water dims it: strong where you look across the surface, almost nothing where you look down into it. When a meteor crosses low enough, the water shows it too.
🌌 Real star positions for this place and night
🏕️ One cabin window across the water — the only light for miles
🌫️ Cold air over warmer water, so a thin mist drifts along the shore
🌙 The screen slowly dims after 30 minutes as you drift off
What's in the sky tonight:
• The Summer Triangle overhead — Deneb 79° up, Vega 56°, Altair 45°, all sinking slowly toward the west as the night goes on
• The Milky Way through Cygnus, running down the sky toward the southwest horizon — and its reflection in the lake below it
• A new moon: 0% lit and below the horizon the whole time
• A couple of sporadic meteors, the ordinary background rate for a dark sky
