A full scale pirate ship is one of the best centerpieces you can put on a tabletop, until you sit down to paint every single plank. In this video I break down the three techniques I used on the wood of this 28mm galleon commission: overbrushing, sponging and drybrushing, and how they stack together for a weathered, sea worn deck without edge highlighting every board.
What's covered
• Overbrushing: a heavier load on a flat brush held nearly flat, so the raised wood takes the color and the cracks stay dark from the primer
• Sponging: a torn scrap of sponge and a lighter, slightly desaturated brown to break up the deck with random weathering
• Drybrushing: a pale, sun bleached tone wiped almost dry and flicked across the grain to catch the sharpest edges
What I used
• Dark primer (black or dark brown)
• Apple Barrel Melted Chocolate for the overbrush
• Apple Barrel Chestnut for the sponging
• A pale bone or driftwood gray for the drybrush
• A flat brush, an old drybrush and a clean scrap of kitchen sponge
