The defense's expert told the jury Life360 is not reliable for speed or location. Then the State asked what data in this case he had looked at.
This is the Life360 Trial, State of Connecticut v. Cooper Ouellette, in New Britain. Ouellette is charged with manslaughter in the death of 17-year-old Sophie R. in May 2023, and is presumed innocent. The State's case leans on Life360 phone data. Here the State rests, and the defense calls its first witness: a digital forensics expert who says that data cannot carry the weight.
Watch both halves. On direct, he explains why a phone is not a GPS unit. On cross, the State goes straight at what he reviewed, and gets "That is correct" again and again. I think the jury has to weigh the opinion and the homework behind it separately. We're not the jury; only the jurors decide.

0:00:00 What this video is, and a preview
0:00:46 to 0:02:52 - Video starts: Jury out, the State asks the judge to bar the defense expert: he never looked at this case's data. "The objections overruled."
0:02:52 to 0:04:22 - The jury returns, the State has rested, and the defense calls its first witness by video from Michigan.
0:04:22 to 0:08:55 - Who he is: a former Michigan State Police digital forensics analyst who uses Life360 himself.
0:08:55 to 0:10:00 - His opinion: Life360 "is not reliable enough" for location or speed, and the app's own help page says so.
0:10:00 to 0:13:45 - Why a phone is not a GPS unit: a small handset against an airplane's antenna, and what weakens the signal.
0:13:45 to 0:18:17 - 250 miles an hour in reverse. What an expert should do with a reading like that.
0:18:17 to 0:20:29 - The State's cross: $450 an hour, he asked for the raw data, never got it, never analyzed it.
0:20:29 to 0:23:06 - He gave his opinion before seeing any of this case's data, and never returned the State's call or email.
0:23:06 to 0:28:08 - The State confronts him with his October testimony. Today, he still has not reviewed the phone files.
0:28:08 to 0:33:17 - Never worked at Life360. Then his own positions: phones locate within a few feet, and he has warned about tracking.
0:33:17 to 0:35:29 - Can a phone show how fast a truck was moving? "I said yes." And he uses Life360 for his own family.
0:35:29 to 0:39:26 - The defense pulls it back: general location, not speed, and no case he knows of used it for accuracy.
0:39:26 to 0:41:35 - The day the app put his son out on Lake Superior. Then he is thanked and the judge calls a break.
