"Tennessee Whiskey" has become the signature song of country superstar Chris Stapleton. Written by Dean Dillon & Linda Hargrove, the song was first recorded by David Allen Coe in 1981, then George Jones took it to #2 on the Billboard Country Singles chart in 1983.
"Tennessee Whiskey" was a track on Stapleton's debut solo album " Traveller" in 2015, but was not released as a single. After Stapleton and Justin Timberlake sang it as a duet at the Country Music Association Awards in 2015, the song rocketed to #1 on the Country Singles chart and crossed over to #20 on Billboard's Hot 100 rock chart. Rolling Stone magazine has ranked Stapleton's version of the song at #90 on its list of the "200 Greatest Country Songs of All Time".
"Tennessee Whiskey" was the encore song for Stapleton at a sold-out Paycor Stadium (home of the Cincinnati Bengals) on Sunday, August 1st, as part of his All-American Road Show. In the lead-in to the song, Stapleton introduced all of the members of his brilliant band: J.T. Cure on bass guitar; Derek Mixon on drums; the legendary Paul Franklin on pedal steel guitar; renowned record producer David Cobb on 6-string guitar; Lee Pardini on keyboards; the legendary Mickey Raphael on harmonica; and Morgane Stapleton on backing vocals & tambourine. R&B singer Allen Stone joined Stapleton on the song.
"Used to spend my nights out in a barroom
Liquor was the only love I'd known
But you rescued me from reachin' for the bottom
And brought me back from being too far gone
You're as smooth as Tennessee whiskey
You're as sweet as strawberry wine
You're as warm as a glass of brandy
And, Honey, I stay stoned on your love all the time..."
