In this Toastmasters speech I talk about our instinct to categorize people. How fast we do it, how lazy it can be, and how much it costs us.
Drawing from Hans Rosling’s “Factfulness” and Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s powerful TED Talk “The Danger of a Single Story,” I share:
• A personal story that went from friendly conversation to instant judgment
• How a single fact (or zodiac sign) can erase everything else about a person
• Everyday boxes we put people in — engineers, accountants, accents, quiet people, loud people, and more
• Why single stories are convenient… and dangerous
This was my 2nd Toastmasters speech delivered on July 15, 2026
If this resonated with you, drop a comment. I’d love to hear a time someone put you in a box… or when you caught yourself doing it.
