This engineering statics tutorial goes over the internal sign convention for beam bending. It is all based on virtual cuts, and the internal forces: axial force, shear force, and internal bending moment. Which side of the virtual cut you are inspecting is important. You 100% need to memorize the positive sign convention here, as it is used in statics, mechanics of materials, and all structural engineering and analysis courses that involve beam bending. Understanding and being quick with this sign convention will be important for being able to draw shear force diagrams and bending moment diagrams, which are a big part of all of the courses just mentioned.
