We first spotted a herd of elephants and several Indian gaurs grazing in their natural habitat. The true thrill of the jungle hit us when an elephant we were tracking suddenly vanished into the dead silence of the forest—a ghostly, exhilarating reminder of how masterfully these giants blend into their surroundings. ​The adrenaline spiked even higher later in the trek when we crossed paths with a massive tusker. It was a terrifying, heart-pounding moment as the elephant froze, actively trying to sense our presence and catch our scent. ​Note on safety: Moments like this truly make you respect the raw power of Parambikulam's wildlife! ​Our overall stay at the Veettikunnu Island Nest was an absolute blast. Even leaving the island brought its own rewards; the moment we returned to the mainland at the bamboo rafting location, we were greeted by yet another majestic tusker and several Mugger crocodiles sunning themselves by the water. ​An unforgettable ecosystem, and a truly unforgettable day.
