Can you have double jaw surgery after facial contouring surgery? And why would someone need orthognathic surgery if they have already had facial bone contouring? Facial contouring surgery can reshape areas such as the jawline, chin, and cheekbones, but there are limits to what it can correct. Because surgeons must work within anatomical boundaries, including the location of important nerves, facial contouring alone may not adequately correct conditions such as: • Protruding or underdeveloped jaws • Underbite or other bite problems (malocclusion) • Significant facial asymmetry • Jaw-position problems affecting both appearance and function In some patients who actually require double jaw surgery, undergoing facial contouring alone may even make the mouth or lips appear more protruded because the underlying position of the upper and lower jaws has not been corrected. So, can double jaw surgery still be performed after facial contouring? Yes. In appropriate cases, double jaw surgery may still be performed to reposition the jaws and address problems that facial contouring surgery could not correct. However, this means undergoing another major surgery. This is why receiving an accurate diagnosis from the beginning—and determining whether facial contouring surgery, double jaw surgery, or another treatment is actually appropriate—is extremely important. In this video, an oral and maxillofacial surgeon explains the difference between facial contouring and double jaw surgery, why some patients may need orthognathic surgery after previous facial contouring, and what should be considered before choosing surgery.
