What happens when you stop seeing yourself as a victim and finally take responsibility for your life? Stephen Wesner is a 33-year-old entrepreneur and real estate professional from Portsmouth, Virginia. His story is complicated, difficult, and deeply human. Stephen grew up in a tough environment surrounded by complicated family dynamics, drugs and alcohol, and incarceration. His father has been in prison throughout his entire life. He also experienced an emotionally abusive stepfather and spent years carrying the weight of those experiences. He didn't go to college. While many of his friends left and moved forward, Stephen became an automotive technician and struggled with the feeling that life had happened to him. For years, he lived in what he now describes as victimhood. Then, in his late 20s, Stephen took a month-long trip to Europe with his best friend and brother. During that trip, he quit smoking weed, gained clarity, and experienced something he hadn't felt in years: the ability to truly see himself. That trip became a turning point. Stephen returned to the United States and began confronting the harder part of transformation—not simply changing his circumstances, but changing his relationship with himself. He eventually faced bankruptcy, responsibility, entrepreneurship, his past, and the question of who he actually wanted to become. In this episode of The Leap Beyond, Stephen and I have one of our most open, vulnerable, and honest conversations yet. We talk about: Finding your authentic self Victim mentality and victimhood Taking responsibility for your life Childhood and difficult family dynamics Growing up around drugs and alcohol Having a father in prison An emotionally abusive stepfather Stephen's relationship with his mother His special relationship with his “Grammy” Leaving weed behind and finding clarity Traveling to Europe and experiencing a turning point Entrepreneurship and real estate Bankruptcy and financial responsibility Failure and rebuilding Accountability and personal growth Breaking old patterns Learning to stop blaming your circumstances Becoming more self-aware Vulnerability and authentic conversations What it means to truly become yourself Stephen's story isn't about having a perfect life. It's about what happens when you stop waiting for your life to change and start taking ownership of the person you're becoming.
