TWO GENERATIONS OF THE SAME IDEA These two bikes are only a few years apart, but they come from either side of a shift in what a two-stroke road bike was supposed to be. The RD350LC is the road bike. Liquid cooling, a monoshock chassis and a two-stroke twin developed from the machines that built Yamaha's reputation through the seventies. It looks like a motorcycle of its era because that is what it is — a fast, light, honest road bike that happened to be quicker than almost anything else on the road at the time. The TZR250 is the race replica. By the mid-eighties the factories had stopped pretending; the TZR took its layout, its chassis thinking and much of its character straight from the racing department. An aluminium beam frame, full fairing, a liquid-cooled twin with the YPVS power valve, and a riding position that tells you what it is for. It is a road-legal interpretation of a racing 250 rather than a sports version of a road bike. Ride them back to back and the difference is not really about speed. The RD feels like a motorcycle you could use for anything that happens to be very quick. The TZR feels like a racing bike that has been made legal. Both are enormously good; which one is right depends entirely on what you want from it. WHY BOTH ARE GETTING HARDER TO FIND Two-stroke road bikes disappeared from European showrooms in the early nineties when emissions rules closed in, and nothing has replaced them since. That makes this whole category finite: no more are being made, the survivors get thinner every year, and the ones that were ridden hard — which is most of them — are long gone. The TZR is the scarcer of the two in Europe. It was never sold here in the numbers it reached in Japan, so a good many of the ones you see are Japanese-market machines that came over later. That makes condition, numbers and paperwork worth checking carefully on any TZR, wherever you buy it.
