Shimokitazawa Awa Odori 🇯🇵 | Traditional Dance & Summer Festival in Tokyo | 4K POV

Join me for an evening 4K POV walk through Shimokitazawa — where I unexpectedly came across the lively Shimokitazawa Awa Odori (下北沢阿波おどり) summer festival. What started as a normal nighttime walk through the streets of Shimokitazawa suddenly turned into a chance to experience a traditional Japanese matsuri right in the middle of this vibrant Tokyo neighborhood. The Shimokitazawa Awa Odori transforms the streets and shopping districts into an open-air dance floor. Numerous groups of dancers and musicians, known as ren, move through the streets performing Awa Odori, one of Japan's best-known traditional dances. With the streets packed with people, I moved around the neighborhood trying to capture as much of the festival as possible. Throughout the walk, you can catch glimpses of traditional taiko drums, musicians and the distinctive happi jackets worn by members of the different dance groups. Awa Odori originated in Tokushima Prefecture on the island of Shikoku, but large Awa Odori festivals are also held in various parts of Tokyo during August. Experiencing one by chance made this walk through Shimokitazawa particularly special.
