Fixing Years of Slop in This VW Shifter

On Today’s Episode of I Fixed It! Brandon sorts out years of slop, vague shifting, questionable modifications, and one VERY short shifter in a 1967 VW Beetle Convertible. After digging into the shift linkage system, Brandon of Be Aircooled walks through the process for; VW shift rod bushing replacement, shift coupler installation, shifter adjustment, and generally undoing whatever in the world previous owners had going on underneath this classic Air-Cooled Volkswagen. Along the way we inspect worn components, clean things up, reuse what’s still perfectly serviceable, and install a proper “average sized” shifter back into this Beetle so it can actually be driven without feeling like you’re stirring soup with a broom handle. If your VW Beetle shifter feels loose, sloppy, vague, hard to find gears with, or generally unpleasant to operate, there’s a good chance the shift rod bushing and rear shift coupler are overdue for attention. These are some of the most common causes of poor shifting in classic Volkswagen Beetles, Karmann Ghias, and other Aircooled VW models. Fortunately, with a little patience, some basic tools, and moderately flexible orangutan arms, this is absolutely a repair you can tackle yourself at home.
