Buying your first car is a dream for many middle-class families. But what happens when that dream comes with a monthly EMI that becomes difficult to manage?
In this video, I share my personal car-buying journey — from considering a second-hand Maruti Suzuki Wagon R to buying a new Maruti Suzuki Fronx Sigma CNG, and now planning to sell it.
When I was working at Apollo Tyres with a monthly salary of around ₹20,000, I wanted a car for practical reasons, including travelling comfortably with my wife and our Golden Retriever.
Initially, I considered buying a second-hand Wagon R. However, the loan interest rate I encountered made me reconsider my decision. I eventually moved towards buying a new car, thinking it might be a better option.
But buying the car was only one part of the story.
My monthly EMI was ₹11,315, and I also had rent and other household expenses to manage. Over time, I realised how important it is to consider your overall financial situation before committing to a car loan.
Now, I am in the process of selling my car. I discuss the price I paid, the selling offer I received, the potential financial loss, and some additional costs that can arise when closing a car loan and transferring ownership.
This is my personal experience, not professional financial advice. I am sharing what happened to me so that others can think carefully before making a similar decision.
🚗 *WHAT YOU WILL LEARN IN THIS VIDEO*
• Why I initially considered a second-hand Wagon R
• Why I changed my mind and chose a new car
• My experience buying a Maruti Suzuki Fronx Sigma CNG
• What a car EMI looked like against my salary and expenses
• Why a seemingly affordable EMI can become difficult to manage
• The difference between a car's purchase price and its resale value
• My current car-selling experience and the offer I received
• A basic overview of loan interest, outstanding loan amounts and possible foreclosure charges
• Why selling a car with an active loan may involve additional steps
• The financial lessons and mistakes I learned from my experience
💡 *MY BIGGEST LESSON*
Before buying your first car, do not look at the EMI alone. Think about your income stability, rent, family expenses, fuel, maintenance, insurance and future plans.
A new car may feel like a better choice at the time, but the right decision depends on your personal financial situation. A used car is not always the better option, and a new car is not always the wrong one.
My aim is to share my experience honestly so that you can make a more informed decision for yourself.
Please remember that interest rates, loan terms, foreclosure charges and transfer procedures can vary depending on the lender, loan agreement and applicable rules. The figures discussed in this video reflect my own situation and should not be treated as universal costs.
💬 *LET'S DISCUSS*
If you were earning ₹20,000 per month, would you buy a new car on EMI, look for a second-hand car, or wait until your income increased?
What would you consider before buying your first car?
