Deontay Wilder vs Jai Opetaia has been announced, and I’ve got to say, this is a fascinating fight!
Dana White has revealed that Jai Opetaia will step up from cruiserweight to heavyweight to face former WBC heavyweight world champion Deontay Wilder on the undercard of Tyson Fury vs Anthony Joshua in Cardiff on December 11, with the event set to be broadcast on Netflix.
But is this the right fight for Opetaia to announce his arrival in the heavyweight division? And does Deontay Wilder still have enough left in the tank to cause a major upset?
In this video, I give my immediate reaction to the announcement and break down what I think could happen when these two meet.
I’ve said for a long time that Jai Opetaia is an outstanding cruiserweight. Technically, he’s a fantastic fighter, but I’ve also got some serious reservations about how successful he can be at heavyweight.
For me, there are two big questions. Is he physically big enough to compete with the top heavyweights? And does he get caught too often to survive against the division’s biggest punchers?
That’s what makes this particular matchup so interesting.
We all know Deontay Wilder isn’t the fighter he once was. Since those gruelling battles with Tyson Fury, his balance, movement and ability to pull the trigger haven’t looked the same.
But one thing you can never take away from Wilder is that devastating right hand.
We saw glimpses of it again in his recent fight with Derek Chisora. Despite everything that’s happened in Wilder’s career, he still possesses the kind of power that can change a fight in an instant.
And against a southpaw like Opetaia, that straight right hand could be particularly dangerous.
I discuss whether Opetaia has the boxing ability to avoid Wilder’s power, whether he can hurt or stop the former heavyweight champion, and why I believe this could be a sensible first test of his heavyweight ambitions.
We also touch on the possibility of Opetaia eventually facing Oleksandr Usyk, whether he can genuinely establish himself among the heavyweight elite, and what a victory over Wilder could mean for his career.
With the fight taking place on such a massive platform alongside Fury vs Joshua, this is a huge opportunity for Opetaia to introduce himself to a much wider audience.
But can he take advantage of it?
