Mount Cammerer Epic Hike!

What an underrated gem! I camped at Cosby Campground the night before and hit the trail around 4 PM, fully embracing a sunset-to-night hike. Early on, I followed a peaceful river with wooden bridges and mountain springs cutting through dense foliage. As the elevation climbed (3,200+ ft gain), temps dropped into the high 50s—perfect hiking weather. The trail carved along stunning ridgelines with crisp mountain air and an epic sunset lighting up the Smokies. As I crested the summit, the terrain transformed—jagged, raw, and panoramic. Then came the crown jewel: the 1930s stone Mount Cammerer Fire Lookout Tower. Every window framed a different masterpiece—Tennessee on one side, North Carolina on the other. Standing on the wraparound deck at dusk was surreal. The descent in pitch darkness, guided by red light and headlamp, only added to the adventure. Total trek: ~12 miles roundtrip from camp. Originally planned to hike LeConte, but the Nimblewill Gap closure rerouted me here. Turns out, detours sometimes lead to the best destinations. 10/10 – My favorite Smoky Mountains hike to date. Highly recommend for solitude, history, views, and soul-refreshing elevation.
