Babu Ghatom - Dr. S. Karthick The story behind Muthuswami Dikshitar’s Nottuswara sahityams is well known. The way the Composer took Western Music tunes and set Sanskrit lyrics for them is a fascinating study. At least three pieces of Tyagaraja demonstrate the impact of Western Music. The first and the most popular is ‘Varaleela gana lola,’ in Shankarabharanam. It remains a popular song, especially for the students of Keyboard. The second, ‘Sarasa netra’ is also in Sankarabharanam. The third, ‘Raminchuva revarura’ is in Suposhini, a raga in which Thyagaraja was the first to compose. It is a janya of Harikambhoji. All three songs have flat notes dominating, with minimum of gamakas, a strong characteristic of orchestral western music. The Suposhini song is in Tisra gati. A Chittaswaram in Chaturasra gati is being attributed to the song by Dr. M. Balamuralikrishna. Suposhini is the janya of Harikamboji, the 28th Mela.
