Why the Ocean Refuses to Make Anything Bigger Than a Blue Whale

A blue whale is larger than any dinosaur that ever walked on land. Not larger than most of them — larger than all of them. The greatest sauropods reached around seventy tons, the absolute limit of what two hundred million years of land evolution could produce. A blue whale reaches more than one hundred and fifty, and some have been measured past one hundred and eighty. Nothing outcompeted the dinosaurs. What happened is stranger and quieter than that: a limit was lifted. On land there is a hard ceiling built into the physics of bone, and no amount of evolutionary time gets around it. The ocean does not have that ceiling. This documentary is about what happens to an animal when that limit is taken away — what it can do, what it costs, and where the new limit sits. The Antarctic population was cut to well under one percent of what it had been. An animal that spent millions of years beyond the reach of everything was taken to the edge of disappearing in about sixty years. Commercial whaling is banned now and the numbers are climbing — slowly. An animal that matures late and produces one calf at a time does not recover on a human schedule.
