What is life like at every rank inside North Korea’s army? This time, the entire hierarchy is seen through one connected disaster. The story takes place during the devastating 2016 floods in North Hamgyong Province, as soldiers, officers, commanders and senior leadership all respond to the same emergency from completely different levels of power. At the bottom is Yun-seok, an ordinary Private trying to protect his family and help civilians trapped by the flood. Above him, every new rank sees a larger piece of the crisis. Private. Lance Corporal. Corporal. Senior Corporal. Sergeant. Sergeant First Class. Master Sergeant. Sergeant Major. Junior Lieutenant. Lieutenant. Senior Lieutenant. Captain. Major. Lieutenant Colonel. Colonel. Senior Colonel. Major General. Lieutenant General. Colonel General. General. Vice Marshal. Marshal of the Korean People’s Army. Marshal of the Republic. Grand Marshal. But this is not just a rank breakdown. Every level is part of the same story. Yun-seok’s mother, Mi-ran, is trying to feed people during the emergency. His sister Hae-jin arrives with one child’s shoe and reports that civilians may still be trapped at a riverside school. Meanwhile, soldiers and officers are receiving conflicting information. Headquarters eventually reports that the school has been completely evacuated. It hasn’t. One boy is still trapped inside. As the rank rises, the same disaster changes meaning. At the lowest level, it is mud, water, fear and individual lives. At the middle ranks, it becomes rescue teams, vehicles, manpower and orders. At the highest ranks, it becomes reports, statistics, political pressure and decisions involving thousands of people. The video follows all 24 levels of the Korean People’s Army hierarchy while telling one connected fictional story inspired by the real 2016 North Korean floods. The characters and dialogue are fictionalized for storytelling, while the military hierarchy, setting and historical disaster are based on real-world information. How different does the same crisis look when you go from a Private at the bottom… all the way to the highest levels of North Korea’s military system? #NorthKorea #NorthKoreanArmy #KPA #MilitaryRanks #EveryRank #NorthKoreanMilitary #DPRK #MilitaryHistory #ArmyRanks #YourLifeAs #History #AnimatedHistory #Documentary #NorthKoreaHistory
