Portofino sits just 18 meters above sea level. Only 355 people live here year-round, and the whole village curves around a single bay on the Ligurian coast. Castello Brown dates to 1425 and still watches the harbor from its wooded ridge. Below the rocky point offshore, the Christ of the Abyss was placed 17 meters underwater in 1954. A marble plaque on the cliffside path marks a 1966 Christian mission held from May 25th to June 5th, and King Richard I of England anchored in this bay in 1190 on his way to the Crusades. Herringbone cobblestones lead from the quay into narrow lanes where every shutter is painted forest green. Stone underfoot stays cool beneath pine canopy on the upper paths, and the slipway near the coast guard post is still wet from the morning hose-down where boat crews rinse gear before trade begins. The walk ends on the Passeggiata dei Baci, the Walk of the Kisses, where pine branches part just enough to show turquoise water far below.
