The Detroit Red Wings desperately need offense — and Todd McLellan may have found something in the third period.
After what McLellan described as “five periods” where the Raymond-Copp-DeBrincat line had nothing going, he put together a new combination:
Michael Brandsegg-Nygard – Emmitt Finnie – Alex DeBrincat
And suddenly, Detroit had life. The new line helped produce the Red Wings’ first even-strength goal of the season, with Finnie at center and MBN and DeBrincat on the wings.
MBN was especially impressive. McLellan praised him for playing his “best game as a Red Wing,” while Brandsegg-Nygard led Detroit with 6 shots and added 4 hits. His combination of physicality, shooting and energy could be exactly what this lineup needs.
So has Detroit stumbled onto its new top line?
I’ll also get into a take that might not be popular with everyone: if Dylan Larkin is healthy and available, should he replace Andrew Copp on the Raymond line? Fans may not want to see Larkin right now, but Detroit needs goals — and the Red Wings have to ice the lineup that gives them the best chance to produce offense.
We’ll break down MBN, Finnie and DeBrincat, what this line could become, and where Larkin fits into the equation.
