This event, organised by the Academia Europaea Budapest Knowledge Hub, brings together leading experts and practitioners to discuss the challenges faced by researchers from Widening countries and explore practical approaches to overcoming them. The event opens with Prof. Maria Leptin, President of the European Research Council (ERC), presenting the ERC Working Group's White Paper on Widening European participation. This is followed by two examples of successful approaches from Widening countries: Prof. Zdenek Strakos (Charles University in Prague) presents the Czech ERC mentoring scheme and its role in supporting researchers preparing ERC applications. Prof. András Stipsicz (ERC Scientific Council member, Rényi Institute) shares the experience of the Rényi Institute and the strategies behind the successful ERC applications of its researchers. The presentations are followed by an interactive Q&A moderated by Katalin Solymosi (Academia Europaea Budapest Knowledge Hub), exploring obstacles, institutional support, mentoring, research environments and good practices that can help researchers from Widening countries compete successfully for ERC funding. The discussion is particularly relevant to researchers and research leaders in EU13 and other Widening countries, as well as policymakers, research managers and anyone interested in strengthening participation in European research and innovation programmes.
