Retired NYPD Detectives: Women Living Alone, Put Foil on Your Door Knob Before You Go Out Last March, a widow three blocks from me, I'll call her Bernadette, came home from the hairdresser. Seventy-four, and on her own. Her son had put a $180 doorbell camera on her front porch. It caught the mailman and a squirrel. It didn't catch the man inside her house, because he came over the back fence. What gave him away was a square of kitchen foil on her back doorknob. About a dime's worth. That foil couldn't hold a door shut. But it showed her something from three steps away, before she ever reached for the knob. I'm Jackie Shaw. I spent 33 years with the NYPD, 14 of them working burglaries in Queens. Foil on a doorknob won't stop a burglar. Used the right way, it tells you somebody tried your door before you ever touch it. In this video, I count down all 20, including: 🔑 Why foil can't lock anything, and why you won't hear it either 🔑 Where the trick came from, and what it really is: a tamper sign 🔑 The three tests every burglar runs on a door: knock, knob, shoulder 🔑 How to wrap it, the picture you take before you leave, and the door that gets it 🔑 Turning the deadbolt every time, three-inch screws and a rubber wedge 🔑 Number one: if it's been touched, you don't go in The foil doesn't protect the house. The habit protects you. 📚 Jackie's large-print safety books for women on their own: https://jackieshawsafety.com Chapters 0:00 Bernadette and a dime's worth of foil 2:07 20.
