Supernova 1987A: The Explosion We Watched in Real Time

Something passed through the Earth on 23 February 1987. Three machines buried underground recorded about two dozen of them. Nobody looked up for another three hours. That was Supernova 1987A — a star that died in a satellite galaxy of our own around 160,000 years ago, and whose light happened to arrive on an ordinary Monday morning. This is the story of the best-observed stellar death in history: the only supernova ever caught in neutrinos, the only one whose star we can point to in a photograph taken before it died, and the only supernova remnant anyone has watched continuously from the first day. It runs from Ian Shelton's photographic plate at Las Campanas Observatory to the argon lines the James Webb Space Telescope found at the centre of the wreckage in 2024, closing a search that had taken thirty-seven years.
