Every winter morning, you turn the key and do what you were taught: pump the pedal, let it idle for fifteen minutes, crank the heat. But some of those habits were made for carbureted engines from the 1960s, and on a modern car they quietly wear out the engine you're trying to protect. I'm Frank Decker. I spent 38 years fixing cars, 15 in dealership service departments and 23 running my own shop in Dayton, Ohio, and in this video I walk you through the six cold start mistakes I saw wreck engines winter after winter, and exactly what to do instead.
In this video:
What really happens inside your engine on a cold morning: thick oil, a weak battery and unburned fuel
Why pumping the gas pedal floods a modern fuel-injected car
What revving a cold engine does to your bearings, transmission and turbo
How long you should really warm up your car, and why 15 minutes of idling does more harm than good
Why blasting the heater slows your warm-up, and why your temperature gauge can fool you
How short trips fill your oil with moisture and fuel, and the weekly drive that fixes it
The pre-winter checklist: battery load test, the right oil, coolant freeze protection and a half-full tank
When a block heater is worth it
My simple cold morning routine, start to finish
The true story of a customer, his egg timer and the engine he wore out by babying it
No scare tactics and no "mechanics don't want you to know" nonsense. Just what 38 years in the shop taught me about getting your car through winter without a big repair bill.
How long do you warm up your car on a cold morning? Did your father teach you the fifteen minutes or the two pumps on the pedal? Let me know in the comments. I go through every single comment.
