In One Day: Family Hike through Idagrotte, Carolafelsen, Falkenstein and Countless Panoramas

We climb to see the world. We walk to feel free. The forests and sandstone cliffs of Saxon Switzerland — another adrenaline‑filled hike. This time, the Affenstein massif decided to test our courage. We returned not to conquer the mountain, but to understand it more deeply. Klein Winterberg greeted us calmly, as if giving a short breath before what was coming next. The true character of Affenstein revealed itself when we turned toward Vorderes Raubschloss (Frienstein) — a 130‑meter sandstone tower that once held the Burgwarte watch post on its summit. Even today, you can see stone grooves and traces of old steps — history carved directly into the rock. Standing beneath this giant, you feel that humans were never rulers here — only guests. Then came the adrenaline part: descending the eastern side of Frienstein toward Idagrotte, a massive sandstone cave reached by a narrow, steep and exposed ledge hanging above the abyss. The final section — no railings, no guarantees. Only those who understand that every step is a decision can walk here. And we walked. Hands sliding along cold sandstone, feet searching for stable edges, the heartbeat setting a rhythm you cannot stop. The cave greeted us with darkness, silence and the smell of stone — like stepping into a story written by robbers, guards and the mountain itself. After the darkness of the cave, we reached Carolafelsen — a wild viewpoint where we met the sunset. The horizon melted into orange light, the wind carried the scent of the forest. This is not a panorama. It’s a moment the mountain shows only to those who come with respect. The descent to Schmilka through Heilige Steige was the final exam of the day. A maze of ladders, the smell of sandstone, narrow passages — every step tested focus, every turn reminded us of the risk. And when we finally reached the valley, we understood one thing: Affensteine welcomed us into its story — into its rocks, its darkness and its light. And we left not only with kilometers.
