On 6 November 1895, Consuelo Vanderbilt prepared for America’s most spectacular society wedding behind a guarded bedroom door. Her eyes were so swollen from crying that her maid repeatedly pressed ice water against them before lowering the veil. Outside, enormous crowds and hundreds of police waited; inside St. Thomas Church, thousands of flowers surrounded a Duke who kept checking the time. The marriage transferred $2.5 million in railroad shares toward the restoration of Blenheim Palace. During the honeymoon, Consuelo learned that her husband had sacrificed the woman he actually loved to marry her fortune. She later remembered crying alone night after night in luxurious hotel rooms across Rome and Monte Carlo while newspapers continued describing her as the world’s most fortunate bride.
