For thousands of years he never moved. Then the cold reached his own fire — and the warden at the edge of the world stood up.
This is the story of Surtr: the fire giant who sits on the border of Muspelheim, older than the gods and older than the first day. Nine worlds grew up behind his back while he sat perfectly still — and then something crossed the line he was keeping.
Questions this film answers:
• Where did the very first spark of creation come from — and whose fire was it?
• What if every star in the sky was made of the same fire?
• Why does a giant sit motionless for an entire age? What exactly is he holding back?
• Why would a god trade away the greatest sword in the nine worlds — and what did that trade cost him at the very end?
• And when there is nothing left to guard, what does a guardian do?
The whole saga is told by one old voice — the way somebody tells a story he has told many times before and no longer needs to dress up. He never raises it, never hurries and never explains more than he has to, so a good half of this you put together yourself. That is exactly why the ending lands the way it does.
Stay to the last minute: after the fire, one green leaf opens in the burnt bark, and two figures walk out of a hollow into a world that is only just beginning. Who they are is the one question this film deliberately leaves with you.
Norse mythology told the long way round — fire and ice, the world tree, the long winter, the breaking of the rainbow bridge, and Ragnarök seen from the one side nobody ever tells it from.
