A major milestone has just been reached on the HS2 approach into Birmingham — the visible gap between Curzon No. 2 Viaduct, better known as Bellingham Bridge, and the Lawley Middleway Viaduct has now disappeared.
During an evening visit to Birmingham on 14 September 2026, I noticed that the ends of the two major steel viaduct structures now meet at the same supporting pier.
From the footage it is not possible to confirm whether the two viaduct structures have yet been physically joined or connected together. However, visually, the gap that previously separated them ( • HS2 Bellingham Bridge: One More Move Befor... ) has now been closed.
I have been following the progress of Bellingham Bridge and the surrounding Curzon Street approach viaducts for some time, so this represents a significant change in the appearance of the route.
The Lawley Middleway Viaduct and Curzon No. 2 form part of the sequence of structures that will eventually carry HS2 trains into Birmingham Curzon Street Station.
This video takes a closer look at this latest milestone, along with some night-time footage showing progress around the eastern approach to Curzon Street.
There is still plenty of finishing and structural work to be completed, but the HS2 approach into central Birmingham is increasingly beginning to resemble one continuous railway alignment.
