In 1775, the Queen of France was not allowed to put on her own shirt. Marie Antoinette was 19, an archduchess of Austria and the daughter of Empress Maria Theresa, and every morning at Versailles her day belonged to other people. Follow one morning hour by hour: the curtains opened at eight, breakfast of coffee or chocolate on a tray (sometimes on the lid of her bath), the book of fabric samples where she chose her dresses by sticking pins into them, the chemise passed from hand to hand by rank while she stood shivering, the towering poufs that made ladies kneel in their carriages, the public toilette at noon, the walk to Mass through the Hall of Mirrors, dinner in front of strangers without taking off her gloves, the bread riots at the palace gates, the coronation she did not share, and her escape to the Petit Trianon.
