In April 1972, Jane Fonda won the Academy Award for Best Actress. In July she sat down on a North Vietnamese anti-aircraft gun outside Hanoi, laughing, in a helmet, and somebody took a photograph. For the next fifty years it followed her everywhere she went. She was Henry Fonda's daughter, Hollywood's girl next door, then Barbarella. Then, almost overnight, she became the most famous face of the movement against the Vietnam War: the raised fist in a Cleveland booking photo, the FTA show, a Nixon enemies list, and an FBI file that ran to hundreds of pages, including a letter the Bureau later admitted it had forged. After Hanoi came the Radio Hanoi broadcasts, calls for a treason trial that could never succeed, and a name that stuck: Hanoi Jane. This is what the record shows, and what it doesn't. In this documentary: • The photograph, July 1972 • Henry Fonda's daughter, and the mother she lost • From Tall Story and Cat Ballou to Barbarella • The fist: the Cleveland arrest, the FTA show and the FBI's forged letter • Klute, the Oscar, and the speech she didn't give • Two weeks in Hanoi: the dikes, the broadcasts, the gun • Hanoi Jane, and why treason was never charged • The prisoners come home • Coming Home, On Golden Pond and the Workout • "That two-minute lapse": the apology • The story that wasn't true Chapters: 0:00 One Photograph 0:58 Henry Fonda's Daughter 2:15 Hollywood's Girl Next Door 3:51 Then, Almost Overnight 4:57 The Fist 7:19 Best Actress 8:22 Two Weeks In July 10:52 Hanoi Jane 14:26 Homecoming 15:20 Coming Home 16:55 On Golden Pond 18:04 Feel The Burn 19:04 Two Minutes 20:44 The Story That Wasn't True 21:59 What The Photograph Became Hollywood Retrospective tells the true stories behind old Hollywood's scandals, legends and forgotten lives, taken from the record and not the gossip.
