In 1752, workers digging under a town near Naples broke into a room full of black, crumbling "logs." Some were thrown away as charcoal. They were books: the only library from the classical world ever found where it was left, carbonized by Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD.
For almost 300 years, these scrolls could not be opened without destroying them. In June 2026, researchers announced they had read one sealed scroll from beginning to end, without ever unrolling it. And it wasn't written by the philosopher everyone expected.
That was one scroll. Hundreds are still sealed. Much of the villa has never been excavated. What else is waiting in the dark?
