Ancient Myths That Turned Out to Be TRUE

For most of history, myths were treated as stories—tales of gods, monsters, heroes, and impossible events that could tell us what ancient people believed, but not necessarily what actually happened. Then archaeology started digging. Troy, the legendary city of the Trojan War, turned out to be a real city buried beneath layers of ancient settlement. The palace of Knossos revealed a massive maze-like complex and a dangerous bull-leaping culture that may have inspired the legend of the Minotaur. Across the Eurasian steppe, archaeologists uncovered the graves of real warrior women who may have helped inspire the Greek stories of the Amazons. And then there are the stories of catastrophic destruction and ancient floods. The destruction of Tall el-Hammam in Jordan has been proposed as evidence of a massive cosmic airburst that could have inspired later traditions of fire falling from the sky—but that interpretation remains scientifically contested. Meanwhile, a proposed catastrophic flooding of the Black Sea may help explain why flood stories appear across so many ancient cultures. None of this means the myths were literally true. There were no Minotaurs hiding beneath palaces. No gods necessarily hurled sulfur from the heavens. But beneath some of the world's most famous legends may be memories of real cities, real people, real disasters, and real events that were passed down for generations until history and mythology became almost impossible to separate.
