Beethoven – Moonlight Sonata, 1st Movement, Played Slower | Dark Piano

Beethoven never called it the Moonlight Sonata. He called it "Sonata quasi una fantasia": a sonata in the manner of a fantasy. In 1801 a sonata was expected to open fast and brilliant. Beethoven opened this one with its slowest music instead, a quiet tide of triplets over a low, tolling bass, and asked the player for the utmost delicacy. The instruction printed in the score is "delicatissimamente." There is nothing about moonlight anywhere in it. The name arrived after his death, when the poet Ludwig Rellstab wrote that the first movement made him think of moonlight on Lake Lucerne. The image stuck so completely that Beethoven's own title is nearly forgotten. He is said to have grumbled about this movement's popularity even in his lifetime: "Surely I've written better things." He dedicated the sonata to his young piano student, Countess Giulietta Guicciardi, a woman he may have been in love with. This is the complete first movement, Adagio sostenuto, and this reading is slower than most you will hear. That is deliberate. The score asks for the utmost delicacy, and slowness is where that delicacy lives: the triplets keep moving but never hurry, the melody barely rises above a whisper, and the whole piece holds that hushed space between calm and sorrow. It suits the late end of the day: reading, settling in for the night, sitting with your thoughts while the room goes quiet. If it settles you, there is more where this came from.
