AEW Dynamite's go-home show for Full Gear was one of the worst I've ever seen. The tone of the show ranged from dark, death-baiting storylines to happy-go-lucky cameos from social media stars. Nothing ties together. Everybody seems to be on an island, and despite all that talent, AEW has stopped being both cool and compelling at the same damn time. I could write a book on all the ways AEW went wrong in 2024, but there was one very specific moment last year where AEW jumped the shark and the entire product went to hell. They had Jon Moxley, and they had Darby Allin. They had The Young Bucks, and they had The Acclaimed. They had CM Punk and Jack Perry, okay—bad version, too soon. They had Chris Jericho and MJF. MJF is easily AEW's biggest star in terms of aura, wrestling ability, promo skills, you name it. But MJF is basically Joe Burrow on the Bengals. A generational talent on a team that's going nowhere. MJF is a great talker and a great wrestler, but that doesn't translate to great promos and great matches. It translates to good delivery and pretty good matches. Big difference. There was an unintentionally hilarious sequence during the go-home show involving MJF, and it speaks to why AEW is so bad these days. AEW aired a backstage promo with the Costco Guys, teasing a big announcement. The comedy segment was immediately followed by MJF in a backlot, giving spare change to David Bix and cutting a promo on Roderick Strong's dead parents. Out of nowhere, this is the first time anybody's heard of this issue with Roderick Strong's character. It was a desperate promo to hype up an ice-cold feud that nobody wants to see. Of course, the story was based on real-life because AEW doesn't know how to create compelling angles from scratch. Another reason they jumped the shark but let's handle one problem at a time. So Max goes: "Roderick, your mom killed your dad when you were a kid, and this Sunday—when I get done with you—I'm gonna make you wish she killed you!" We'll be right back. And they go to commercial. When they come back from commercial, we see the Costco Guys again, who announce The Rizzler for Full Gear. So in three segments, we've gone from the Costco Guys, to Family Homicide, back to the Costco Guys, and the next segment features Roderick Strong, who couldn't look and sound like less of a star, responded to MJF like "Yeah my parents are dead, but you know what, Max?! I'm still standing!" What program am I watching?! I came to see wrestling matches. Isn't this where the best wrestle?! I get it, you don't know how to tell stories, I'll forgive you if you shut up about death and drugs for three seconds and slap on a hammerlock. Please. AEW is the territory where MJF cuts reality based promos about people's dead parents; and being bullied by antisemitic high-schoolers; and his fiance breaking off their engagement; Darby Allin has talked about his Uncle getting drunk and causing them to get in a car crash. All in the same territory where Christian Cage cuts weekly promos about people's actual dead parents.
