Sri Mallikarjuna Jyotirlinga is located on the Srisailam hills along the banks of the Krishna River in the Nandyal district of Andhra Pradesh. It is revered as the second of the 12 sacred Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva. Because of its immense spiritual significance, this holy destination is often referred to as the "Kailash of the South." 🌟 Key Highlights & Religious Significance Union of Shiva and Shakti: This is one of the rare and most sacred sites in India where a Jyotirlinga and a Maha Shakti Peetha coexist. Lord Shiva is worshipped here as Mallikarjuna Swamy, and Goddess Parvati is enshrined as Bhramaramba Devi (the 6th of the 18 Maha Shakti Peethas). The Meaning of the Name: The name is a combination of two words: 'Mallika' (representing Goddess Parvati or the jasmine flower) and 'Arjuna' (another name for Lord Shiva). Spiritual Belief: According to the Shiva Purana and Skanda Purana, merely catching a glimpse of the peak of the Srisailam hill can liberate a human being from the cycle of birth and death. 📜 The Mythology (Story of Origin)According to Hindu mythology, a loving dispute arose between Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati's sons—Lord Kartikeya and Lord Ganesha—over who would get married first. The Challenge: To resolve this, Shiva and Parvati set a condition: whoever completed a full circle around the entire Earth first would be married first. Ganesha's Wisdom: Lord Kartikeya immediately set off on his mount, the peacock, to encircle the world. However, Lord Ganesha wisely chose to circumambulate his parents seven times, stating that his parents represented the entire universe to him. Kartikeya's Renunciation: Impressed by his wisdom, Ganesha was married first. When Kartikeya returned and discovered this, he felt hurt and retreated to the secluded Krauncha Mountain (the Srisailam region) to live in isolation. Manifestation of the Jyotirlinga: Deeply saddened by their son's departure, Shiva and Parvati traveled to the mountain to pacify him. However, out of respect, Kartikeya moved further away. To remain close to their son, Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati settled on the Srisailam hill, manifesting eternally as the Mallikarjuna Jyotirlinga and the Bhramaramba Shakti Peetha.🏛️ Architecture & HistoryDravidian Architecture: The temple complex is a brilliant specimen of traditional Dravidian architecture. It is enclosed by massive fort-like walls (Prakaram) featuring intricate stone carvings depicting scenes from the Mahabharata and Ramayana. Ancient Patronage: The temple has enjoyed the patronage of major historical dynasties, including the Satavahanas, Kakatiyas, Vijayanagara Emperors (King Harihara I built the Gopuram), and Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, who constructed the northern tower.
