In today’s video, I’m having an open conversation about Black Tax — the financial responsibility many of us feel to support our parents, siblings, and extended family back home.
I’ll be sharing how much I personally set aside every month for Black Tax, how I budget for helping my mum and siblings back home, and why I believe supporting family should still come with financial boundaries.
Helping the people we love is a beautiful thing, but we also have to remember that we have bills, responsibilities, savings goals, children, and a future to prepare for. ❤️
In this video, I talk about:
💷 How much I budget for Black Tax each month
👩👧👦 Supporting family while managing your own household
📊 Why I include family support in my monthly budget
🚫 Why you shouldn’t go into debt to help others
❤️ Dealing with the guilt of saying “I can’t afford it”
🔥 Avoiding financial and emotional burnout
💰 Setting healthy boundaries while still supporting family
One thing I’m learning is that you cannot help everyone at the expense of your own financial stability. It’s okay to have a limit. It’s okay to say no sometimes. And you should never feel pressured to borrow money or get into debt just to meet other people’s expectations.
If you also experience Black Tax, I’d love to hear your experience. Do you set aside a specific amount every month for family? How do you manage it without affecting your own finances? Let’s have a respectful conversation in the comments. 👇🏾
