Cramming 22 players, a ball, and a referee onto a two-inch, unlit screen was always going to be a tall order. The Game Boy Colour wasn’t exactly known as a powerhouse for sports simulations, and trying to replicate the beautiful game on an 8-bit handheld resulted in some truly bizarre, battery-draining experiences. However, hidden among the inevitable terrible ports and clunky cash-grabs are a handful of genuine retro gems. As part of my ongoing series ranking the greatest retro football games console by console, we are scaling things down to look at Nintendo’s legendary handheld. Today, I’ve waded through the entire GBC library to rank every single football game on the system, from the absolute worst to the very best. The Ground Rule: Playable Action Only: We are strictly looking at on-the-pitch action, meaning pure management sims have been benched for this list. Grab some spare AA batteries, and let's get into it. 0:00 - Intro 0:51 - Zidane Football Generation 2:43 - ISS 99 4:58 - Three Lions 7:02 - David Beckham Soccer 9:14 - Ronaldo V-Football 11:23 - J-League Excite Stage GB 13:07 - European Super League 16:55 - The FA Premier League Stars 2001 19:02 - UEFA 2000 21:11 - David O'Leary's Total Soccer 2000 23:10 - ISS 2000 25:36 - FIFA 2000 27:37 - Pocket Soccer If your favourite childhood handheld didn't get the respect it deserves, or if you actually enjoy the games at the bottom of the list, let me know down in the comments.
