Nearly 2,000 years ago, an ancient port on the western coast of Kerala served as a hub for traders from as far away as the Roman world. Trade in pepper and other goods stretched as far as the Mediterranean. This port was named Muziris. But today, a major question remains—where did this important trading center of the ancient world go? In this documentary, we will explore the history of Muziris, the ancient maritime trade between India and Rome, and the important evidence uncovered from archaeological excavations in Pattanam, Kerala. We will also explore why Pattanam is associated with Muziris, what questions remain about this identification, and whether the natural disaster of 1341 truly led to the decline of this ancient port. In this video: • Ancient history of Muziris • Maritime trade between India and the Roman Empire • Importance of the pepper trade • Mentions of Muziris in the Periplus, Pliny, and ancient Tamil literature • Archaeological evidence from excavations at Pattanam • Ancient jetties, amphorae, beads, and other objects • Questions about the exact location of Muziris • The natural disaster of 1341 and the possibility of the port's decline • The gap between history, tradition, and evidence Was Pattanam the ancient Muziris? This is a strong possibility, but its identity and the exact extent of the entire port remain a subject of research. This video is based on historical sources, archaeological information, and available research. Where evidence is uncertain, speculation and tradition are distinguished from established history.
