Pack an apple and your walking shoes, because today's Read Along With Scott follows a very independent moose! We are reading This Moose Belongs to Me, written and illustrated by Oliver Jeffers. Wilfred is quite sure the moose is his. He has named him Marcel, and he has written a long list of rules for being a good pet. The trouble is that the moose has plans of his own, and he wanders off into the mountains whenever he pleases.
This reading includes:
• A boy with a very long list of rules
• A moose who does not seem to have read them
• A surprise meeting that makes Wilfred wonder who the moose really belongs to
• A sticky situation, a rescue, and a friendly compromise
As always, today's Read Along With Scott begins with a small index-card art ritual. For this reading, I made an autumn collage in my handmade red-and-black frame: bold scribbles of crimson, orange, and yellow crossed by dark, wandering lines, like a mountain forest in October with a moose's path winding through it.
This episode supports:
• Prediction — will the moose ever follow the rules?
• Vocabulary — belong, rules, wander, compromise
• Social-emotional learning — the difference between owning and caring, sharing a friend, and meeting halfway
• Family storytime — deadpan humor, sweeping landscapes, and a warm ending
Thank you for joining me for this funny and gentle story about a boy who learns that some friends cannot be owned, only loved.
